Rocky horror was wonderful tonight (and yes, V, Rocky was better than the one on 12th street :P). We had an awesome, awesome time.

What a day…

Filed under: General, True Life, Work — Matan Ar'ye Schwartz @ 4:57 am

Well, here is a quick re-cap of my day…

First, I take an early train to the City, take the #3 subway down to 14th street and go to a meeting. In the middle of the meeting the power goes out with a loud-ish bang. The first questions on my mind were (in order of appearance):

1. Is this a terrorist attack
2. Is the city in “Lock Down” mode
3. How the !@#$ am I going to get to my meeting in queens on time???

Well, I go down to the F train, and find that it has been shut down, as well as most of the other subway trains. I walk up to 34th street (20 blocks) and find out that the subway lines up there aren’t working either. Then I go to Penn Station, and catch a train to Jamaica, I get picked up at Jamaica and go over to my meeting. We go over the details of the book - they drop me off at a train stop that is two stops away from Jamaica when we’re done. Get off at Jamaica, walk down two flights of steps only to find out that the train I am supposed to take to get home is coming in across the platform where I just got off so I run back up the three flights of stairs and down the other side and make my way home (27 minutes later) to Hicksville Station, call my house - find out that one of our house guests is there, ask for a ride home (as I didn’t have the car) and get a “no” so an 8 dollar taxi cab ride later, I wind up back at home, tired and then I grab the car and take the guests out to dinner (kill ‘em with kindness, kill ‘em with kindness…).

Needless to say, it has been a long day.

Back from Buffalo

Filed under: True Life, Work — Matan Ar'ye Schwartz @ 6:24 am

Well, I got back from Buffalo yesterday, everything went swell, but I miss being up there. I went dorm room shopping the day we left Buffalo for NYC in the morning before our flight; got a bunch of cool stuff (thanks Mom!) including what I call “my extra pocket” it is literally something that you sling over your person and it has about 1 million and one pockets, inside and outside, and pockets inside pockets and it is very very cool (for those of us who are slightly…OCP…and organized because of it).

I got my Buffalo email (mls34@buffalo.edu) but all of my email comes into one box anyways, so it doesn’t make a difference which one you email at (though I prefer matan@nomadmatan.net).

Today I was at the work in Manhattan in the morning doing Microsoft Access work (not my favorite program to do database work in, but it’s what my office has) Tomorrow I’m working in the city in the morning, then I have a 3pm conference call, then an editorial meeting at 7 and then I’m heading to queens to do more layout work. Long day, but I do have plenty of books to read on the trains. I walked out of Barnes and Noble with two shopping bags of some “light reading” and then came home to find a 50.00 Barnes and Noble gift certificate from one of my uncles. I think I’ll buy some more books on my lunch break tomorrow (there is a multilevel B&N a couple of blocks away from my office).

Peace,

~ Matan

How I ended up in my underwear infront of 350+ People…

Filed under: True Life, Undergraduate, University — Matan Ar'ye Schwartz @ 1:47 am

That’s right, you read the topic right, and it was voluntary too…

At one of the lectures a group of students came in and offered someone 500 dollars for the bookstore (hey, books are expensive) if they could produce a) a 2000 penny b) a bra c) a shoelace and d) a pair of guys pants. And since I only had the shoelace and the pants, I was out, and someone asked if they could borrow my pants - and well, how could I refuse, so off they went and there I was standing in a room of 350 people in my boxer-briefs, fortunately, I wasn’t the only one.

The second part of this charade was that the people who won the scavenger hunt had to do a “stupid human trick” and then we voted which one (of the four) would win.

Person a) (female who I gave my pants too btw) tried to sing - failed miserably. Waste of my pants.

Person b) (male) stripped and tried to do “strip tease” - failed miserably

person c) (female) pretended to strip but took of no clothing - failed miserably

person d) (female) took of her shirt and stood on her hands - won 500 bucks and garned comments for the rest of the orientation along the lines of “if she strips for 500, I wonder what she would do for free tuition.”

The rest of orientation was fabulous, I had a great time, got my username’s and passwords, saw how the whole thing works and it’s going to be a great few years.

Up in Buffalo

Filed under: True Life, Undergraduate, University — Matan Ar'ye Schwartz @ 12:37 am

Well, I’m up in Buffalo. The plane ride was nice, as I booked it so that Mom and I had two aisle seats across from each other so we had a lot of leg room. The inflight crew was wonderful, so it was a pleasant time all around.

Right now I am at the business center at the Hotel checking my email and printing things that I am going to need tomorrow. I decided to leave the laptop home because I don’t have a dial up account so it would have been pointless to bring it.

Tomorrow is the actual orientation where I’ll get a tour of the campus, my UB ID Card and hopefully my campus IT Information.

Anyways, I need to finish what I’m doing and print stuff, so I’ll ttyl.

Wow, I’m almost all packed

Filed under: General, True Life, Undergraduate, University — Matan Ar'ye Schwartz @ 8:33 am

Coolios, I’m almost all packed (a load of underwear is in the wash now, so then I can be “officially” done and ready). Wow, I can’t believe its 2:31:50 and I’m still up ::groans:: oh well, Tomorrow will be great!

I’m getting my laptop ready to go now, so let me write out all my news here before I pack it up for the trip.

Today I bound my first book by hand (bookbinding) and it looks awesome! It’s a really cool new trade I’m just getting into. Mom & I are all psyched for Buffalo and I’ll have my cell phone with me if anyone needs me. Other than that, just excited for the next stage in my life to begin :)

G’night,

~ Matan
